"I was so excited to bring the Torpedo back!" Sara Jerabek told The Malibu Times about the menu at The Sandwich Shop. Point Pizza's owners gave her the recipe for the sandwich so she could serve it again. Jerabek grew up in Malibu. Her shop is at 30150 Morningview Drive, across from Malibu Middle and High schools, in a house her grandparents lived in first. Getting the Torpedo takes planning. For now the shop is open Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The rest of this summer's openings work the same way. Malibu gained a breakfast counter, a sandwich shop, an organic grocer and a Japanese concept store, and each one keeps its own hours. The end of the pier now has its own construction schedule as well. The most useful map of town this fall is a timetable.
Four New Doors, Four Different Schedules
The Royal Egg Cafe opened June 15 in Point Dume Plaza. Founders Jaron and Bree Gugliuzza started it in Westlake Village, and The Malibu Times reported that customers who knew the original location were glad they no longer had to drive over the Santa Monica Mountains for it. The kitchen cooks from scratch, uses organic ingredients and no seed oils, and puts dishes like wild boar sausage and grass-fed wagyu skirt steak on the breakfast menu. You can eat inside or out on a dog-friendly patio near the Emily Shane fountain, close to La Nena Cantina and Papa Razzi's Pizza. The owners say ordering through the cafe's own website or app avoids the extra surcharges added on Google and Yelp.
Hank's Organic took more than three years to open in the old PC Greens space. The Malibu Times blamed permitting, fire delays and construction problems. The store has a hot bar, coffee and smoothies, plus a pineapple-slicing machine and a fresh orange juice machine. The paper said neither machine exists anywhere else in Malibu.
BEAMS opened on Malibu Road on August 7, and it opens only on weekends. The Malibu Times called it the Tokyo label's first U.S. concept store. BEAMS started in Harajuku, celebrated its 50th anniversary in February, and runs about 165 stores across Japan and Asia. The Malibu store carries the brand's first collaboration with Hoka.
| Opening | Location | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| The Royal Egg Cafe | 29169 Heathercliff Road, Suite 106, Point Dume Plaza | Daily, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
| The Sandwich Shop | 30150 Morningview Drive | Wednesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
| Hank's Organic | 22601 Pacific Coast Highway | Daily, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
| BEAMS Malibu | 23710 Malibu Road | Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
The Week Has One Shared Window
Line those hours up and only one stretch has all four places open at the same time: Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Royal Egg stops seating after 2 p.m. every day. The Sandwich Shop is closed Saturday through Tuesday. BEAMS is closed Monday through Thursday. Hank's is the only one with long hours, open 14 hours a day, seven days a week.
That makes Friday late morning the time to hit all four in one trip. A Torpedo on Morningview, an early lunch at Point Dume Plaza and a weekend-only stop on Malibu Road all fit into those three hours. A Saturday visitor gets BEAMS and Royal Egg but no Sandwich Shop. On a Tuesday, Hank's and Royal Egg are the only two open.
The short hours suit what Jerabek built. She told The Malibu Times she looks forward to serving students, she caters on request, and orders go through thesandwichshopmalibu.com. Customer Niki Grahame described it to the paper as "the cutest little beach stop" and "the Malibu we grew up loving."
Cross Creek Keeps Regular Hours, With Staggered Openings
The Civic Center stores keep standard retail hours. Their openings have been spread out over months.
At Cross Creek Ranch, The Shop by WHEAT opened this summer with collections for women, men and children grouped by travel destination. It's open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. BIRKENSTOCK announced its Cross Creek Ranch store at 23465 Civic Center Way, Suite 850, in a September 22 release. The brand also celebrated the grand opening with an activation at the Malibu Chili Cook-Off, held September 4 through 7. Guest in Residence, the knitwear brand Gigi Hadid started in New York in 2022, now lists a Cross Creek Ranch store with regular hours. The Malibu Times noted Hadid graduated from Malibu High School. Chitchat Coffee + Matcha is also listed as open at the Ranch.
Several other announced arrivals have no opening date yet:
- Malbon, the golf lifestyle brand, still lists Malibu as "Coming Soon" on its locations page.
- RH and What Goes Around Comes Around were called coming soon to Cross Creek Ranch in July.
- Buck Mason is set to take the former Madison Boutique space next to Faherty at Malibu Country Mart. Its store list doesn't include Malibu yet.
- Temporarily on Leave announced a move from Surf Canyon to Space 14 of the Country Mart. Its website still lists the 3728 Cross Creek Road shop.
Stores already at the Country Mart have been moving within it. M. Frederick took the space next to Tra Di Noi that The Malibu Colony left. It kept its original spot near Taverna Tony's as a surplus store with everything at 50 percent off, open the same hours as the main store except closed Wednesdays. The New West moved to a space beside the lawn, across from John Varvatos in the breezeway. Cherry, the streetwear label, opened its own Country Mart store.
Three Changes on the Food and Wine Side
Some longtime spots changed their status over the same months.
Kristy's at Trancas Country Market announced it would close on September 9 after 15 years. Its map listing now says permanently closed. No replacement for the space has been announced.
Rosenthal Estate held its last public Vineyard Experience tasting on Saturday, September 26. The Malibu Times reported the end of public tastings the next day and gave no details on the estate's future wine or club plans.
Ollo was listed for sale in July as a working restaurant, and its owners cited rising costs. Ollo is still open. It catered the August 22 ribbon-cutting for N2 Aesthetics at 23841 Malibu Road, Suite 18, where city council members and the Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce welcomed the new clinic.
Farther east, Duke's Malibu at 21150 Pacific Coast Highway has been open again since March 13, with longtime general manager Jimmy Chavez running the restaurant.
The Pier Repairs Have Start and Finish Dates
The end of Malibu Pier has been closed since January 2025, when State Parks found structural concerns. An engineering assessment finished in June 2026 found deteriorated and missing pilings that need to be repaired or replaced. In an October 1 release, California State Parks said it gave a $2.125 million emergency contract to Cushman Contracting Corporation to repair or replace the pilings and replace the bracing.
Work is expected to start in mid-October and finish by the end of January 2027, about three months. After that, State Parks will review conditions before setting a reopening date for the end of the pier.
Here's what's open during construction:
- Malibu Farm Restaurant at the Pier, which sits outside the closure zone.
- Beach rentals and equipment services at the pier entrance.
- The designated fishing areas on the pier.
The Malibu Farm Pier Café and the Surfshop/Souvenir Shop at the end of the pier stay closed. State Parks posts updates on its FAQ page, the Malibu Lagoon State Beach page, and the Angeles District's social accounts.
