The districts of Los Angeles are as diverse as the people who occupy them and are rich in history and stunning architecture. There are many options for young professionals with families, artists, musicians, and individuals who want to be close to nightlife, bars, and events but still want a charming environment where they know their neighbors. Wake up on the water in Malibu, with oil paints and pastels in Echo Park, or near rolling hills and agriculture in Brentwood. Los Angeles is filled with options.
Beverly Hills
Live in Beverly Hills alongside celebrities, opulent hotels, and Rodeo Drive shopping. Pick up ingredients for your weekend recipes at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market. If dining out is more your speed, select from a plethora of dining options. Treat yourself to tea at the Beverly Hills Hotel or a cupcake at Sprinkles. While Beverly Hills is technically its own city, some of the other places mentioned in this article are boroughs within LA.
Bel-Air
Dwell near nature and the mansion properties of Bel-Air, part of the platinum triangle that also includes Holmby Hills and Beverly Hills. If you're in the market for an estate or compound, then this is your place. There are many premier schools in town, and UCLA is within driving distance. You’ll never tire of taking in the wonderful art at the Getty Museum or the sights at Getty View Park. Hike one of the many nearby trails, including Getty View Trailhead, Deervale-Stone Canyon Park, or Westridge-Canyonback Wilderness Park. Make sure to have a meal at Wolfgang Puck in the infamous Bel-Air Hotel.
Holmby Hills
Holmby Hills is adjacent to the Western part of LA with easy access to Sunset Boulevard, just in case you need a shopping trip. This neighborhood is family-friendly thanks to the nearby Holmby Park, Armand Hammer Golf Course, and Los Angeles Country Club. Many of the properties have been renovated and expanded into estates, and Holmby Hills is also home to the Playboy Mansion.
Brentwood
Escape the fast pace of the city with your family by your side in elegant Brentwood. Get outside in the Round Valley Nature Preserve and venture out on one of its many hiking trails or just sit and admire the wildlife. Spend a Saturday grabbing a cup of coffee, fresh produce, seafood, mushrooms, kettle corn, hummus, or other offerings at Brentwood’s Farmers’ Market. Sip on a glass of cab, merlot, heritage, white, rose, or viognier from Hannah-Nicole Vineyards.
Hancock Park
It’s all in the architecture in Hancock Park, which was named after the Hancock Family. Many of the beautiful homes were built in the 21st century with notable architects, including Wallace Neff and Lloyd Wright. Keep your eyes open because no two homes are alike. The edge of this neighborhood runs along Melrose, so a shopping trip is always within walking distance.
Los Feliz
Live happily in Los Feliz, a neighborhood surrounded by Griffith Park, Atwater Village, Silverlake, East Hollywood, Hollywood, and the Hollywood Hills. Both the 101 and the 5 are adjacent to Los Feliz, which makes grabbing drinks with friends or going to a show easy. Go for a long walk in Griffith Park, explore the numerous trails, or watch a live show at the open-air Greek Theatre.
Echo Park
Bohemians and artists alike rejoice in the alcoves of Echo Park. Don’t forget to catch a Dodgers game if you need an open field and sunshine. Wander around the Time Travel Mart Friday through Sunday or get your steps in at Baxter Street Stairs. Admire the ever-changing murals of this wonderful district.
Malibu and Northeast LA
Tucked in the Santa Monica mountains is the gorgeous Malibu area, known for its beach vibes and Mediterannean climate. Wake along the water with your loved ones in a town that claims “21 miles of beauty,” and bring your surfboard to El Matador, Zume, Point Dume, or Dan Blocker Beach. Even if you don’t surf, you can still admire the rock formations and calming vistas. Shop at Malibu Country Mart, wax your surfboard, or dine on the pier. Rove through the magical Malibu Creek State Park and visit Rock Pool or Century Lake. This park was featured in the television show M*A*S*H.
Silverlake
Silverlake is a walkable area, and many of the residents are young professionals, artists, and families. Take a stroll near Silverlake reservoir or bring your pup to the adjacent dog park. There’s also plenty of boutique shopping near Sunset Junction. Grab a cup of coffee, a drink, or a bite at any of its surrounding venues. Enjoy Japanese fusion at Nobu as you dine and overlook the azure waters.
